Biochemistry 2, L1 definitions
Polar amino acid
cysteine, threonine, serine, tyrosine, asparagine, glutamine
Aspartate / aspartic acid
acidic amino acid with a carboxylic acid and 1 methylene bridge making up its side chain
Glutamate / glutamic acid
acidic amino acid, with a carboxylic acid at the end of a 2 carbon hydrocarbon chain
Histidine
positively charged amino acid with a partially protonated imidazole group on its side chain
Imidazole
1,3-C3N2 ring, found in many biological molecules (including histidine)
sp2 hybridisation
orbital hybridisation forming a trigonal planar molecular geometry, allowing the formation of 1 pi bond and 3 sigma bonds per carbon
sp3 hybridisation
orbital hybridisation forming a tetrahedral molecular geometry, forming four equal sigma bonds
Lewis Structure
diagrams showing bonding between atoms of a molecule, and lone electron pairs
Formal Charge
the covalent view of chemical bonding, assigning a hypothetical charge to an atom in a molecule, assuming all electrons are equally shared within the bonds (regardless of electronegativity)
Resonance Structure
a molecular structure where different bond arrangements can form, without changing the arrangement of the atoms
Delocalised pi system
an electron system where pi bonds are distributed across multiple bonds in the molecule, forming multiple bonds with partial double bond character (as seen in benzene, ...)
