Blatant Biology

Hypothesis Testing
The process of generating data to determine whether a hypothesis is true or not
Hypothesis Generation
Process of creating a research question that can be studied, usually based on an observation
Annotation
The process of interpreting data, categorising; ‘stamp collecting’
Single-Cell Sequencing
Technique using next generation sequencing technologies to obtain the sequence of nucleic acid present in an individual cell
Heritability
Estimate of the degree of variation in a phenotypic trait in a population, that is due to genetic variation between individuals in that population
Trait
A distinct characteristic / phenotype of an organism
ACE Model
Statistical model used to analyse the results of twin and adoption studies, aiming to categorise phenotypic variation into 3 categories of genetic and population variation
Additive Genetic Effects
Genetic effect where more than one gene contributes towards a phenotype, and the phenotypic expression of those genes can be the sum of their individual contribution
Common Environmental Variation
The shared environment component of the ACE model
Non-Shared Environmental Variation
The variation in environment between pairs in the ACE model, plus measurement errors
Monozygotic Twins
twins that are genetically identical
Dizygotic Twins
twins that are genetically different
Broad-Sense Heritability
The proportion of phenotypic variation that is due to genetic values (additive, dominance, epistasis, environmental, …)
Narrow-Sense Heritability
The proportion of phenotypic variation due to additive genetic values (no environmental component, simpler to calculate)
