RNA-seq
method using NGS to assay the quantity of RNA molecules in a sample, allowing transcriptomes to be studied
dT Bead Oligo
a bead used to isolate purified and intact mRNA from crude eukaryotic cell extracts, giving a product that can be used in molecular biology applications; used in RNA-seq to isolate the RNA
Co-Expression Analysis
a way of studying the relationship between a gene of interest and the rest of the genome, ranking the relation between the gene; allows genes with similar expression patterns to be identified
Ontology
a way of describing something
Gene Ontology
a defined way of describing gene function that can be standardised across species and proteins
Hypergeometric Statistics
similar to a Chi-squared test, allowing genes with more transcripts than the reference to be identified (such as if a specific gene is upregulated in a specific cell type)
Hierarchical Clustering
grouping objects by similarity, such as sequences or phylogenetic trees; objects are grouped into clusters and then a hierarchy of relation between those clusters is then determined
Cluster Analysis
a way of grouping objects that are similar, allowing pattern recognition and analysis
Single Cell Sequencing
a method to study the nucleic acid within a single cell, allowing differences between cells to be identified; mutations carried by small numbers of cells can be identified (such as in cancers), as well as RNA and epigenetic modifications being identified
Cell Subtyping
process of determining the specific types of cell present in a sample (such as from a tumour); may be done with single-cell sequencing
